August 22, 2010 – Mango Bay Snorkelling Lines

Earlier in the year we ventured to Mango Bay to install some floated ropes to mark out the shallow corals in this beautiful bay. The aim was twofold, to protect the shallow corals from boat traffic and to protect the numerous Snorkelers that visit Mango Bay on a daily basis.

Since the initial instalment we have been back to extend the line and make the area of coverage much greater. In the ensuing months some of the lines has broken and received varying degrees of damage.

Our aim for the afternoon was to repair and maintain the lines so they continue to protect the shallow reefs of Mango Bay.

It wasn’t a big job but one that needed to be done. Unfortunately the support ropes need to be tied down to natural rocks but we spent some time to search for rocks without coral or other sensitive life that could be damaged.

Developing mooring lines and having properly moored and marked dive sites is one the most prominenet current programs under the Save Koh Tao Group's Marine Conservation Branch, Marine Conservation Koh Tao (www.marineconservationkohtao.com).

Thanks to IDCS Nathan Cook and divemaster trainee and Eco Intern Jane Cowan for their help with this project.
