June 26, 2010 – Beautifying Koh Nangyuan

A lovely sunny afternoon took us to the shores of Koh Nangyuan for our monthly beach and dive site clean up. Eco Koh Tao and crystal Dive decided to join forces to tackle the west coast of this fragile island.

We deliberately stayed away from the dive sites working on the theory that most divers clear any rubbish or nets during their regular diving activities. Concentrating on the coastline between Green Rock and Twins our divers collected mostly nets, plastic bags and rubber items.

Marine Conservation Clean Up

One of the main focuses of these clean ups is rasing awareness and for the lat few years we’ve been educating people to refrain from bringing up rubbish that is not causing any more damage.  For example a glass bottle can provide substrate for other organisms and a home for a fish or shrimp. If we take it out of the water it becomes part of Koh Tao’s land fill and provides little, if any further good. It was encouraging to see fewer bottles brought up this time.

Thank you to everyone who participated and helped us remove over 170 kgs of rubbish from around this beautiful island.
