May 18, 2010 – New Moorings in Mango Bay
In conjunction with Marine Conservation Koh Tao’s island wide mooring buoy project Eco Koh Tao took a small team with Crystal Dive out Mango Bay to ensure this popular snorkelling destination is safe for divers, snorkellers and corals alike.
For the last 12 months or so the Save Koh Tao group have endeavoured to increase the number of mooring buoys for dive boats and roped off snorkelling areas island wide. It has been a community initiative with many dive schools getting involved.
The aim is to ensure that boat drivers know where the delicate shallow areas are located so they can avoid driving over or worse, dropping anchor in these areas. We put a line out in Mango Bay some six months before but it was too short. So the intention was to finish the job we started a few months back.

So far the project has been successful with fewer boats dropping anchors in many locations. The Save Koh Tao group has recently made a grant proposal to the Project Aware Foundation for a grant to fund the next round in our mooring buoy project: to design and install mooring lines in sandy areas rather than tying onto delicate natural underwater features as we do now. This is an exciting new project and one we will definitely be closely involved with.
