Eco Koh Tao News

July 25, 2009 - Monthly Beach and Divesite Clean Up: Mae Haad

This month’s clean up by the Save Koh Tao group was well attended by a number of dive schools and concerned individuals determined to make a difference in this tropical paradise.

The location was Mae Haad beach directly out the front of Eco Koh Tao’s base of Crystal Dive. This made access easy and our group of enthusiastic ecodivers took to the waters directly from the beach.

The sun was shining and the wind had abated for the first time in a while allowing perfect conditions for the afternoon clean up. Depth was an issue with seasonal tides making the maximum depth on 4-5 metres in some places.

Mae Haad is always a ‘big’ clean up. being the main harbour for Koh Tao many boats moor here everyday meaning there is a heavy human presence at all times. Divers collected a mountain of garbage from our waterways including glass and plastic bottles, batteries, biscuit tins, fishing nets, clothes and numerous other odds and ends.

Finishing up at about 4 some of us managed to beat the storm that cam through and drenched the late finishers. The every changing weather of Koh Tao!

Thank you to all those participants who helped out for the benefit of Marine Conservation and for the preservation of Koh Tao’s most important resource.
