May 31, 2009 - Monthly Clean Up Draws a Big Crowd

The end of the month brought stunning weather and calms seas to the bays around Koh Tao. Perfect timing for our monthly beach and dive site clean up. In conjunction with the Save Koh Tao group land clean ups were organised for both Mae Haad and Sairee beaches in the morning. Eco Koh Tao joined with strategic partner Crystal Dive for the afternoon dive site clean up.

Many boats headed for Japanese Gardens with its new wreck as a drawcard we made of the lovely Mango Bay in the north of the island. All together we had 19 participants who joined in to help the environment of Koh Tao.

Every month the Koh Tao community bands together for the benefit of the local dive sites and associated waterways. The result of the clean up was limited with most divers returning with partially empty bags. On the whole we consider that to be a positive that shows the site is pretty clean with little trash and other foreign objects.

Mango Bay is thankfully situated away from Koh Tao’s main population centres and is therefore not subject to land borne garbage as much as some of our other sites.

It was a sensational afternoon with all of those involved thoroughly enjoying the dive. Participants received an introduction to marine biology and an introduction to Project Aware’s Coralwatch Coral Health charts that help to survey corals worldwide for bleaching.

Thank you to everyone who took part to keep Koh Tao a magnificent place to dive.
