May 17, 2009 IDC Candidates and Reef Check Orientation

In an effort to illustrate the important environmental responsibility dive leaders have Eco Koh Tao and Crystal Dive teamed together on the recent IDC to provide a orientation to the Reef Check Eco-Monitoring Program.

Reef Check Eco-Monitoring program is the worlds only standardized program offering eco-holistic reef surveys covering three main areas of the ecosystem – Fish, invertebrates and substrate.

After the Project Aware presentation in the morning Course Director Justin Mayers along with IDCS Nathan Cook, Eco Koh Tao’s Environmental Awareness & Action Manager lead May’s 4 IDC candidates to the waters off Mae Haad.

We were joined by recent Reef Check Ecodivers Tina Major & Kathryn Costis who together with Nathan conducted a full Reef Check survey. The data collected is analysed by our team scientist before being sent to Reef Check headquarters in California for inclusion in their global database.

The IDC candidates found it an informative and relatively relaxed introduction to the world of environmental research and a nice break in the middle of their otherwise hectic IDC schedule.

Eco Koh Tao conducts regular Reef Check surveys and Reef Check Ecodiver courses.
