Marine COnservation Program 6 Weeks
The Nitty Gritty

It is estimated that 25% of the world’s coral reefs have disappeared in the last 20 years and another 25% are severely threatened. We are increasingly becoming aware that the marine environment is a crucial part in guaranteeing our own survival on planet earth.

This Marine Conservation program is designed especially for those with a dedication to the marine environment wishing to learn about the ecology of this magnificent realm and wanting to become part of the solution to its immediate and impending problems.

Your training will begin with your Open Water Diver course introducing you into the magical world of scuba diving. Developing control of your diving capabilities is an important step in your dive training. Preserving the environment requires you to be comfortable underwater and develop good control of yourself and your equipment. Your PADI Peak Performance Buoyancy training and Advanced Open Water  & Rescue Diver Programs will allow you to gain these important skills in a safe and comfortable environment.

Once your initial dive training is complete we will move onto your specific marine conservation which will open your eyes and heart to the wonderful world of marine ecosystems and their ecological intricacies.

We will begin with the Reef Check Ecodiver Course. We will continue your training with the Marine Resource Management Course which will cover the ecology of reefs in detail which will enhance your ability to develop suitable research projects and collect invaluable scientific data.

The Reef Check Foundation was inaugurated in 1996 and provides the only worldwide standardised coral reef monitoring protocol on the planet. By collecting data using the Reef Check methodology you will be adding to the pool of information about the changing state of the world’s coral reefs.

Over the last couple of weeks of your time in Koh Tao we will participate in a variety of conservation projects both on land and in the water which could include coral reef surveys using a variety of methods (Reef Check, Green Fins Reef Watch and Project Aware’s Coralwatch), studying and developing coral nurseries and other reef restoration techniques.

The program is flexible allowing you to be a busy or as relaxed as you like. We have included 8 recreational dives for you to enjoy your time away from the rigorous schedule of studying the underwater world allowing you to simply go out and enjoy a dive without the need to do anything in particular.

Some Program Details

PADI Open Water Diver Course (4 Days) – This is PADI’s introductory level diver training course that will teach you all you need to know to safely manage yourself whilst diving in the Open Water.

PADI Peak Performance Buoyancy Specialty Course (1 Day)– Once you have learnt the basics Buoyancy becomes the most important skill you need to master. Good buoyancy helps you protect the environment while seeing & exploring more of the aquatic realm.

PADI Advanced Open Diver Water

(2 Days) – PADI’s Advanced Open Water Course builds on your basic training allowing you to develop greater confidence in, & understanding of the aquatic environment.

PADI Emergency First Response (EFR) & Rescue Diver Course – Taking your focus outwards you will take a your one day first aid course (EFR) followed by your Rescue Diver Course. This will enhance your dive skills enabling you to identify problems in fellow divers and yourself and adequately manage those problems. This is a challenging course but often considered one of the most enjoyable by many divers.

Project Aware Fish ID Specialty Course – Starting our ecological side of your program we’ll take to the waters to examine the local environment and learn how to identify different fish species and organisms.

Marine Resource Management – Turning our focus to the environment we’ll undertake the PADI Marine Resource Management course, PADI’s most in-depth reef ecology course. This course will dissect the elements of the reef environment to learn how this remarkable ecosystem interacts and thrives on its internal relationships. We’ll learn about some of the issues that are threatening those relationships and find out ways  to improve our own actions, and that of others to enhance the prospects for reef environments around the world..

Reef Check Ecodiver Course including Project Aware Specialty Course – The Reef Check course teaches you to collate scientific data using a standardised methodology that will help in monitoring the health of the reef so that trends can be identified. The course will train your focus on the health of the reef and the aquatic realm and will develop your knowledge of key indicator species from three areas of the ecosystem – fish, invertebrates & substrate. We will have classroom presentations followed by afternoon in water practice on each day. We will culminate our training by joining a team of qualified ecodivers to complete a full Reef Check survey on one of our local sites.

We will also complete the Project Aware Specialty Course as an ideal juxtaposition for the Reef Check Ecodiver course. The certification allows you to join volunteer teams monitoring coral reefs around the world.

Marine Conservation Projects – With your marine conservation training complete we will delve into some local conservation and reef restoration projects. This may include collecting data, transplanting corals, building check dams to stop erosion and siltation of local sites or joining a dive site clean up. This work will show you how to develop conservation projects in a real life environment while giving something back to Koh Tao during your stay.

Recreational Dives – Your program involves a lot of learning and personal development and we realise you’ll need some time to chill out. For this very reason we’ve scheduled in a few fun dives for you to simply go out and enjoy the local dive environment without the need to work to hard collecting data or analysing the reef.
